  • Location: Off Hwy 93 after Mile Marker 52 Heading to Vegas
  • Distance: ~6.00 miles roundtrip
  • Elevation: Start 6,000 ft. Finish 7,000 ft. (+1000 gain)
  • Difficulty: Moderate (depends on fitness level)

Hwy 93 North like your going to Las Vegas, just after passing Mile Marker 52, approximently 1-2 miles pass the Chloride turn off, turn right onto Big Wash Road, a county maintained gravel road. PackSaddle BLM Recreation site area is 9 miles, Windy Point BLM Recreation site is another 2 miles and Cherum Peak Trailhead yet another 2 miles.

Watch out for Horses and cattle!

Both Packsaddle and Windy Point have camping areas and BLM restrooms, Windy Point areas have picnic tables and some fire pits. Nice scenery on the drive in, with the final 4 -6 miles being switchback, mountainous road with some great overviews.

This road technically goes all the way through back to Chloride, but the section past Cherum Peak Trailhead requires an ATV or serious 4 wheel drive.

The hike is approximently a 6 mile round trip, through various terrain and vegetation, varying from Arizona chaparral to pinyon pines, it is considered a moderately strenuous hike. The trail is a well maintained BLM trail with the hiker gaining a little over 1000' on their way to the 6,983' summit.

From the summit, the first thing one notices is the Mercator mine below, with great views of Hualapai valley, Red Lake and the Music Mountains, along the way one gets good views of both valleys to the East and the West. The last section of trail is an abandoned jeep trail and the final 50' to the peak is very rock and has no formal trail. On a clear day you can supposedly see the San Fransico peaks near Flagstaff.

Trail Review

I'm so happy you added Cherum Park to the trails list. My husband and I found it on an exploration day trip (hey- what's up this road?) It's a very adventurous road to navigate and basically goes right up to the top of the mountain. The views, quiet, and solitude are beyond compare. The campground and toilets were pristine. I highly recommend this trip to anyone who wants to discover someplace really different that's right out of town.

I should add that I'm really glad we took the 4-wheel drive! I'm a new member to your website and haven't taken any trips with youyet, but hope to make the time someday.  Deb Rusk - Golden Valley
